History of the Terlingua Church of Christ
Humble Beginnings
Nestled in the heart of the Big Bend desert, the Terlingua Church of Christ is a small but steadfast congregation with a big love for God and people. Its story began in nearby Lajitas, where missionaries Jerry and Ann—after serving more than twenty years in Guatemala—and Marguerita Chanslor started a small church that became a place of worship for travelers and winter residents alike. For several years, their humble building hosted three different congregations, offering a shared space for faith in the desert.
A New Home
After Jerry’s passing in 2001, the work continued through the faithful hands of Marguerita.
With the help of Gene, a local park manager, and many supportive friends, a newly acquired donated piece of land facilitated the construction of a church building along Highway 118. Volunteers from all over Texas helped build the new church. On the third Sunday of July 2003, the first worship service was held—with folding chairs, bare walls, and eight joyful believers.
Growth and Fellowship
The years that followed brought strong fellowship and steady growth.
Members from San Angelo, Alpine, and Junction offered labor, funds, and encouragement. Dayle, who began preaching in 2004, drove 125 miles each Sunday to share lessons of hope and truth. Families like Kevin and Beth’s, and later Cody and Katie’s, added new energy and leadership, especially in song and worship.
A Light in the Desert
Today, the Terlingua Church of Christ remains a welcoming light for locals and travelers alike.
Attendance swells to 30–40 during the winter months, filling the simple desert church building with voices of praise. Though small in number, the church stands as a testament to perseverance, hospitality, and faith—a reminder that even in the quiet of the desert, God’s people are never alone.
